Anointing Of The Sick
James 5:14-15
"Are any among you sick? They should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord. This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven."
What is the Anointing of the Sick?
God's healing love in times of suffering.
The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven sacraments instituted by Christ, meant to provide comfort and healing. Through anointing with holy oil and prayer, the sacrament conveys God’s grace to the sick and suffering. It is a source of physical and spiritual healing, helping individuals find solace in God’s mercy.
Who Can Receive This Sacrament?
This sacrament is available to:
- Those suffering from serious illness.
- The elderly who are notably weakened, even if no serious illness is present.
- Individuals facing major surgery.
- The chronically ill and those struggling with mental health conditions.
The Rite of Anointing
The Anointing of the Sick typically involves the following steps:
- Prayer of Faith: The priest and those present pray for the sick.
- Laying on of Hands: The priest lays his hands on the head of the sick, invoking the Holy Spirit.
- Anointing with Oil: The priest anoints the forehead and hands of the sick with the Oil of the Sick, a special oil blessed by the bishop during Holy Week.
