On the 9th of May 2024, Pope Francis officially proclaimed 2025 as a Jubilee Year in a decree titled “Spes non confundit” (“Hope Does Not Disappoint”), emphasizing hope in a world facing challenges such as conflict, inequality, and environmental crises. The announcement, made during the solemn ceremony of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ at St. Peter’s Basilica, sets the tone for a year dedicated to spiritual renewal, social justice, and global solidarity.

In his decree, Pope Francis urged believers to be “tangible signs of hope for those of our brothers and sisters who experience hardship of any kind.”

The first Catholic Jubilee was proclaimed in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII, with subsequent Jubilees celebrated every 25 years. This marks Pope Francis’ second Jubilee proclamation, following the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, which he inaugurated in November 2015 in the war-torn Central African Republic, advocating for peace amid the conflicts.

Jubilee Year Commencement, Holy Door Openings and Pilgrimage

The Jubilee Year will commence on Christmas Eve 2024 with the ceremonial opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica. In the following days, the Holy Doors at Rome’s other major basilicas—St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls—will also be opened. Cathedrals around the world will participate in this symbolic act, inviting Catholics to embark on pilgrimages as an expression of faith and renewal.

Call for Justice and Mercy

Re-echoing Pope John Paul II’s appeal during the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope Francis advocated for the cancellation of debts owed by impoverished nations and called for clemency for prisoners. Francis urged wealthier nations to reduce military spending and reallocate resources to combat poverty and hunger. He also highlighted the plight of migrants, displaced persons, and those marginalized, urging believers to offer “signs of hope” and concrete acts of compassion during the Jubilee Year.

Ecumenical Significance

The Jubilee Year coincides with the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), a pivotal moment in Christian history that affirmed the unity of the Church. Pope Francis expressed hope that 2025 would foster closer ties between Eastern and Western Christians, particularly through a common celebration of Easter, symbolizing unity in diversity.

A Year of Reconciliation

In line with previous Jubilees, the Pope is encouraging the faithful to embrace the sacrament of reconciliation. Special indulgences will be available, and the Pope has re-commissioned Missionaries of Mercy to facilitate confessions, underscoring the Church’s commitment to forgiveness and healing.

The Jubilee Year 2025 offers a profound opportunity for Catholics and the broader global community to renew their faith, foster hope, and work toward a more just and compassionate world.
